The month of May is a month to celebrate important dates.
Mother’s Day is on 8 May. What would we do without our mothers? All of us were carried by and birthed by our mothers! We would not even be here without them! This is a day to honour the matriarch of our households. In our era, many times Mum is the only parent around. All mothers deserve a heartfelt day to celebrate them and say thanks for all of their sacrifices for us!
Pentecost Sunday is a week later on 15 May. This is a time to celebrate another time of birth – the birth of the Church! On this day we celebrate the long awaited outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The disciples of Jesus had heard Him teaching about this experience. They had heard His teaching on the importance of this event. The prophet Joel had declared: “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days” (Joel 2:28-29 NIV). Peter, on the Day of Pentecost, proclaimed in Jerusalem, “. . . this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel . . . (Acts 2:16). On this day 3,000 people accepted Jesus as their Saviour! The early church came out of hiding and boldly proclaimed the Gospel openly! Signs and wonders followed their ministry and daily people were being saved.
We need the power of the Holy Spirit to fill our lives to enable us to witness effectively until He comes again! Oh Lord, fill us again!!
